SAO PAULO, Brazil – Former US Rep. John Boehner, the 53rd Speaker of the US House of Representatives, was appointed to the board of JBS Foods International (JBSFI), a subsidiary of Sao Paulo, Brazil-based JBS SA. He is one of four independent board members selected by the company.
Lorentz Take: Congratulations to Mr. Boehner for an exciting continuation of his career. Reading the backgrounds of the four independent new board members for JBS, though, makes us wonder about the business of food. There’s a logical step missing. Everyone can basically agree that food affects health. Strangely, though, our governmental bodies handling health care have nothing to do with food and the governmental bodies handling food have nothing to do with health. But the money makers will dip their fingers in both—banking on the power of one to feed the other. Or so it might seem. There’s at least no concerted or obvious effort (on this level) to make either industry actually be good for people.
